In surgery, my empathy was once called a weakness. In yoga, it became my superpower.

Dr. Adam L. Johnson, MD Breast Surgical Oncologist · Certified Yoga Teacher · Founder, The Pink Kingdom

Adam's mother, grandmother, and aunt all died from breast cancer. Three more women in his family have been diagnosed, ranging from 31 to 61 years old. Genetic testing revealed a BRCA1 mutation that elevates a woman's lifetime risk of breast cancer by 60%.

As a son, grandson, nephew, brother, cousin, and now surgeon of women affected by breast cancer, he understands the weight — physical, mental, emotional, spiritual, financial — that this disease places on a family. Yoga, meditation, Kung Fu, Tai Chi, and Reiki have been his medicine through grief. Now these practices are part of how he heals others.

A Doctor Driven by The Loving Memory of His Mother

A letter from my mother revealed my purpose.

On Adam's 16th birthday, his mother gave him a letter. He carries it still.

Adam,

You arrived on a Friday afternoon around 1:15. The labor pains were extremely hard but you are worth all of them. I thank God for allowing me to stick around. I do not take that for granted.

I didn't even know I could get pregnant because the chemo had stopped my cycle. But just as your Daddy stated in December 1988, after I was told I had cancer, I would have a son and his name would be Adam.

"I just wanted you healthy. Not only are you healthy but handsome and intelligent as well. You're also witty, wise, and goofy. I love to hear you laugh."

Anyway your Daddy was driving so fast he was throwing me across the seat. I asked if he could please slow. He said you're not having the baby in the car. After he drove about 20–25 miles to the hospital, you did not take long to get here. It felt like my eyeballs were about to pop out. Your Daddy yelled It's a boy!

I just wanted to see you. May you be richly blessed in all that you do.

"God is the reason you are here."

I love you very much. Happy 16th Birthday.

Love,
Mommy
